Many industrially important materials have very complex flow behaviours, for example multiple-phase pastes, doughs and other highly filled substances. It is essential that a good understanding of the rheological properties of these materials is determined so that safe and efficient production processes may be specified, and effective quality control procedures installed. Celsum Technologies' team of scientists, engineers and consultants have much experience in providing instruments for such complex materials.

A "made-to-measure" version of the Eta 2100, built largely in stainless steel and with blind holes, cracks and other "bug traps" designed out. For use with materials such as foods, pharmaceutical, medical components, explosives and propellants, biological and similar materials. Available with remote control and electronics routed via intrinsically safe barriers if desired. The photograph, left,of the BFR 2100 Extrusion Head, shows the stainless steel construction, dual-banked non-contacting limit switches and piston holder with sealing bellows above. Non-sparking materials are used throughout for the construction and for cleaning and operating tools.

The BFR2100 is designed to allow high shear rates and high pressures to be achieved in order to mimic the conditions found in production. The instrument may be used, as well as for the study of flow properties, to produce samples under controlled conditions which may then be subjected to further testing regimes.

A range of ancillary equipment may be used to quantify parameters such as die swell (or, more correctly, extrudate swell or the Barus Effect), viscous heating phenomena, extensional flow properties, and pressure coefficient of viscosity.

Key features of the BFR 2100:

Specification generally as the Eta 2100, with extra features:

Single barrel version allows external barrel threads for die holder
Externally threaded die holder allows ease of cleaning and improved safety
Externally threaded die holder allows O-ring seal for added safety
Die holder may be fitted with blow-out shear disk
Blind holes and cracks eliminated at design stage
Materials of construction tested for chemical compatibility
Earth bonded (grounded) to eliminate static build-up
Barrel manufactured from ultra-pure through-hardened stainless steel
Barrel pressure and piston load monitored simultaneously
Non-sparking materials for cleaning and loading tools
Safety circuit may be interlocked with door switches etc
Independent "policeman" temperature sensor
Operation from a remote-control station if desired
Over-pressure, over-load, over-torque and over-temperature cut-outs
Pressure monitored with mercury-free pressure transducers

RheoTenax software can automatically raise ram in case of danger
Emergency Abort button raises ram rapidly
Pressure transducer, piston tip and die holder protected by Viton™ O-rings
Option for very high temperatures available
Optional barrel geometries, eg 50mm, 40mm, down to 10mm diameter
Electrical connections routed via safety barriers or sealed conduits
PCV adaptor measures Pressure Coefficient of Viscosity
CIRP allows non-contact measurement of surface temperature of a spot 0.8mm diameter
CADS advanced non-laser high-speed die swell measurement to 2 microns
CEST Combined Extrudate Swell and Temperature system
Parallel bore, hyperbolic and other profile precision extrusion dies available
