IPU40 Lightning Protection System for Strain Gauges
Download datasheet for IPU40 Lighning and Surge Protection Barriers  Search our site:

Features

 Lightning protection to 20kA
 Clamps voltage to typically 33V
 Easy to connect
 Pre-wired and tested
 IP67 wall-mounting enclosure

Background

Lightning can damage both the strain gauge sensors and sensitive information in the control room by several means:

Direct strike (unlikely)

Nearby ground strike giving circulating currents, i, between the ground connection at the load cell and the ground connection in the control room. This then induces high voltages between the cable/ground and the ground/ground as the earth impedence, z, produces i.z volts.

Magnetic induction between the currents in the cable screen and the inner wires

Currents in signal wires by direct injection from the signal source

Either four wire or six wire strain gauges may be used with the IPU40. Where sensors are installed in parallel, the principle of protection remains the same.

Typical Applications

Vehicle weighing, web tensioning, crane loading, cantilever overload protection, lift assemblies, generic load movers, process sensors, etc.

Two IPU40 units are usually used,
one near the load cell,
and one near the control station
