The standard Satel radio modems may be legally operated in the UK at up to 500 mW without a licence (see Frequencies and Approvals). Should you wish to use a gain antenna with the standard units, the power must be modified so that the output from the antenna remains 500 mW or less. An overall increase in range can still be obtained due to the increased receive sensitivity of the gain antenna. It is possible to use higher power by switching to a licenced band and obtaining the relevant licence. The Ofcom web site provides further details.
OFCOM advise that you should contact your local OFCOM office to enquire about a license. The cost of the license will vary from area to area but start at around £75.
